Models for working with families were presented to professionals from Haskovo region
On 5 February 2019, in Haskovo, Opportunity and Protection Association organized a Workshop on the topic “Models for Working with Families” within the project “Empowerment of Roma Women for Roma Children Education”.
The aim of the forum was to present two successful models for working with parents – “School for parents” and “Family Group Conference” – and to promote the cooperation between institutions and representatives of Roma community to support the education of Roma children.
37 professionals from the educational system, social services, local authorities and NGOs from Haskovo region took part in the Workshop.
The trainers were Yanka Nikolova and Iliana Toteva from Opportunity and Protection Association, Haskovo and Maria Petkova from Tulip Foundation, Sofia.
In the morning the specialists were acquainted with the „School for Parents”. The model, developed in the frames of the project, is aimed at minority families where children’s education is not perceived as a value.
Its purpose is to stimulate the parents to share their views on parenthood; to comment on and draw conclusions about the qualities and behavior of the good parent; to recognize education as a value and to develop skills to support their children.
Yanka Nikolova and Iliana Toteva presented the structure and the content of the model. They also shared with the participants their experience as trainers in “School for Parents” and gave them useful tips for its organization and implementation. The method of work was demonstrated in group work and discussions, which all attendees were willing to join.
In the second part of the Workshop, Maria Petkova presented the Family Group Conferences (FGC). The Family Conference is a non-traditional decision-making model, which is a meeting of the extended family, organized by an independent coordinator. At this meeting the family is given the opportunity to find a solution to a problem by its own resources and develop a plan with concrete steps to solve it.
Maria Petkova presented in details the origin, the essence, the phases of organisation and the participants in the Family Group Conference.
Both models for working with families caused great interest among the participants in the event. They shared that they would like to apply them in their work and declared willingness to participate in the forthcoming training for independent coordinators of FGC and trainers in “School for Parents”.
